A Brief Glimpse

I will be placing one item on this special page called 'A Brief Glimpse'. The item will be from my research file and will appear for a short period of time before it is replaced with a new one. The items may cover Edna, Charlie or any related subject to them. I will mention the latest Brief Glimpse at Edna's Place (a blog site for Edna Purviance).

The 'Nymphs' from 'Sunnyside'
Appear in 'How to Make Movies'?

BG #27 - July 19, 2007

I have read in Glenn Mitchell's book 'The Chaplin Encyclopedia' about Edna Purviance being one of the gals who 'instantly' changed from her day clothes to a bathing suit in this scene from 'How to Make Movies.' Frankly, I never believed it, because the only blond in the group does not look like Edna.

I have been studying images from Edna's personal collection and from other sources and found this gal, believed to be Edna, is actually one of the dancing nymphs in the film 'Sunnyside.' I have placed an 'A' on the gal in question.

If I had some better frontal views of the other gals in 'Sunnyside' I would guess all four of these gals are the dancing nymphs from 'Sunnyside.' (Their names are: Helen Kohn, Olive Burton, Willie Mae Carson, and Olive Alcorn. I don't have the proper order yet.)

Quite a bit of 'How to Make Movies' was made during the time Chaplin are working on 'Sunnyside.'

I will have more about this and Edna Purviance's role in 'How to Make Movies' in the next Brief Glimpse. For now, see image below...

IMAGE: The two photos on top are from 'How to Make Movies'. The scene taken in late 1918 at Chaplin Studio. The one on the bottom is from 'Sunnyside'. The gal marked with an 'A' is the girl in question and she is NOT Edna Purviance.

This is not Edna Purviance, but one of the dancers in 'Sunnyside'.
Still confirming her name.
