Anyone who has seen 'The Great Dictator' would have seen Charlie Chaplin and Jack Oakie having too much English mustard during the 'food fight' scene. If you never tasted this hot mustard, here is a chance to try Edna's favorite way of making it.
Edna's recipe was a very simple one she served with Corn Beef. For this recipe, it is best to start with very small amounts to get the favor you like, before making a larger portion. (And you do need to like hot foods to enjoy this.)
Mix very well the following dry ingredients
1/4 teaspoon of Coleman's original powdered English Mustard
1/4 teaspoon of unbleached or all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon of sugar
After mixing very well.
Slowly mix in one 1/4 teaspoon of white vinegar
And follow with mixing in 1/4 teaspoon, or more, of cold water for the right thickness.
Cover and let stand for a few minutes.
Taste. If you like it slightly sweeter, add a bit more sugar and /or use a finer sugar. Mix well.
Keep track of you measurements.
Increase the portions once you have the favor you like.
You might experiment replacing the sugar with honey or other vinegars for a different favor.
PS - At this time, I don't have the recipe for Edna's corn beef.
