Chaplin selected a more reserve approach in his first introduction to the woman, who he would later learn was the policeman's wife.

Bottom Image - 1950s Reissue
In the earlier version, he was more joyful, at the very start, as he kicked is legs in the air, laughed and flirted with the woman. In thinking about it, it does fit the
scene, as the tramp was victorious in running away from the police.
