The top image shows the current scene, as the Tramp meets the lady.

Bottom Image - 1950s Reissue
The bottom two scenes you won't see in your current version of The Kid. Chaplin used a different hand in the two takes in these two different film versions.

In the earlier film, you can see the 'tangle' it created as he tries to figure his way out. It does add a comical moment in the earlier film, but maybe the older Chaplin thought it looked awkward.
